Merz described the ceasefire agreement after over two years of clashes in Gaza as “good news for the peoples of the Middle East and beyond.”

In a social media post, he said: “I thank U.S. President Donald Trump for the peace initiative and our partners in Qatar, Egypt and Türkiye for their mediation efforts. I also extend my thanks to the Government of Israel for paving the way to peace.”

Emphasizing the need for swift implementation, Merz added: “Hostages, including German citizens, must be allowed to return to their families. The ceasefire must enter into force and remain stable. Humanitarian aid must reach the people of Gaza quickly.”

He stated that Germany’s support will continue: the country has allocated €29 million for humanitarian aid, will co-host with Egypt a reconstruction conference for Gaza, and is ready to assume responsibilities in the Peace Council proposed by President Trump.

Merz concluded: “We have a clear compass: Germany is committed to Israel’s existence and security. We believe the two-state solution offers the best prospect for a future in which Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace and security.”
