However, he did not say whether he would agree to hold peace talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky under Trump’s mediation. Trump had apparently set Monday as the deadline for Putin’s response.

Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China, Putin continued to defend his decision to invade Ukraine and once again blamed the West for the war.

He thanked the leaders of China and India for their support and efforts to "facilitate the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis."

Putin also said he hoped that the "understandings" reached during his meeting with Trump in Alaska would "pave the way for peace in Ukraine."

He reiterated the view that "this crisis was not the result of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, but rather the outcome of a coup in Ukraine supported and instigated by the West."

He also linked the war to the "West’s persistent attempts to include Ukraine in NATO."

The Russian president has consistently opposed the idea of Ukraine joining the Western military alliance.
