US envoy Witkoff to meet Israeli and Qatari officials in Rome on Gaza ceasefire
Stockholm, July 23 (Hibya) – According to two informed sources cited by Axios, White House Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff plans to meet on Thursday in Rome with senior Qatari and Israeli officials to continue negotiations on a Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal.
The trilateral meeting in Rome will take place while Hamas and Israeli negotiators are holding indirect talks in Doha on remaining sticking points.
Witkoff has made it clear in recent weeks that he will join Doha talks only if a deal is within reach.
However, sources familiar with the matter say the Rome meeting is a sign that a deal could be reached within days.
Witkoff is expected to arrive in Rome on Wednesday and meet Thursday with Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and a senior Qatari envoy.
This will follow a similar meeting between the three leaders at the White House two weeks ago.
According to a US source familiar with the details and an Israeli source, if sufficient progress is made, Witkoff may travel from Rome to Doha over the weekend to finalize the deal.
Mediators from Israel, Qatar, Egypt and the US are awaiting Hamas’s response to the latest proposal.
