WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus: Health services must not be targeted
Geneva, July 23 (Hibya) – World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus condemned the crisis in accessing healthcare and the attacks, particularly in Syria’s Suwayda region, emphasizing that health services must be protected under all circumstances.
Ghebreyesus stated that the ongoing conflicts in Syria have deeply affected the healthcare system.
He noted that access to the Suwayda region is severely restricted, making the delivery of life-saving aid difficult.
Pointing out that the main hospital is operating well beyond its capacity due to shortages in staff, electricity, and supplies, he said the WHO is closely monitoring attacks on healthcare workers, patients, ambulances, and medical facilities.
The Director-General emphasized that efforts to verify attacks on health services are ongoing, stating, “Health services must never be targeted and must always be protected.”
