Family of former Greek king applies for Greek citizenship
Athens, December 22 (Hibya) - Members of the former Greek royal family have applied for Greek citizenship. The monarchy in Greece was abolished in 1973, and the royal family lost their citizenship about twenty years later.
The last king of Greece, Constantine II, passed away last year.
The Greek Ministry of Interior announced that relatives of the former Greek king have signed a declaration recognizing the country's democratic government.
The royal family was in exile for decades. The former Greek king returned to the country for just a few hours in 1981 to attend his mother’s funeral. He also attended the 2004 Athens Olympics as a private citizen.
Greek authorities did not specify which relatives of Constantine II applied for citizenship. However, Greek media claimed that among them were his widow, former Queen of Greece Anna Maria, their five children, and five grandchildren.
