Albania Bans TikTok for One Year
Stockholm, December 22 (Hibya) - The use of the social media platform TikTok will be banned in Albania next year. The Prime Minister said that the influence of social media on children has entrenched bullying and violence in the country's schools.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced the ban today, saying, "The problem today is not our children but us, our society, TikTok, and all other social media holding our children hostage."
The ban is expected to take effect next year and last for one year. According to Rama, the situation will then be reassessed, and the reactions of other countries will be analyzed.
The possible link between children’s violent behaviors and their use of social media has recently become a hot topic in Albania. The discussion flared up in November after a 14-year-old child was stabbed to death by a teenager due to a social media dispute.
TikTok stated that the platform was not involved in the incident and that neither child was a registered user.
Children make up the largest group of TikTok users in Albania, and many are concerned that this platform fuels bullying and violence in schools.
