NATO defense ministers seek more weapons for Ukraine
Brussels, October 15 (Hibya) – NATO defense ministers will meet on Wednesday to discuss providing more military support to Ukraine following a sharp decline in arms and ammunition deliveries in recent months.
The ministers will also discuss the NATO Secretary General’s call to lift restrictions on the use of aircraft and other equipment to more effectively defend the alliance’s eastern border with Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine.
Recent mysterious drone attacks and airspace violations by Russian warplanes have heightened concerns that Russian President Vladimir Putin is testing NATO’s defensive reflexes.
According to Germany’s Kiel Institute, which monitors military and financial aid to Kyiv, new data shows that Western military aid to Ukraine dropped by 43% in July and August compared to the first half of the year.
This decline occurred even after European allies began purchasing U.S. weapons for Ukraine under a new financial arrangement known as the Priority Ukraine Needs List (PURL).
The Ukrainian Presidency said at the end of September that the United States had not donated any equipment through programs or bilaterally, but six countries contributed $2 billion to the fund.
Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden are buying U.S. weapons to send to Ukraine.
However, other members of the 32-nation alliance, such as Italy and Spain, are sending far fewer weapons compared to these NATO partners.
