Madagascar army says it has seized power
Stockholm, October 15 (Hibya) – An elite military unit announced that it has taken power in Madagascar from President Andry Rajoelina following weeks of youth-led protests on the Indian Ocean island.
On Tuesday, standing in front of the presidential palace, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, head of CAPSAT, said the army would form a government and hold elections within two years. He also suspended key democratic institutions such as the electoral commission.
Randrianirina added that members of Generation Z would also be part of the changes, saying, “The movement was born in the streets, so we must respect their demands.”
Soldiers and protesters celebrate the apparent ousting of President Rajoelina as thousands wave flags in the capital, Antananarivo.
