Lazzarini said that resuming education amid destruction would bring hope, healing, and continuity, stressing that returning children in the Gaza Strip to education is a top priority.

“Failing to do so will only sow the seeds of despair and extremism. Before the ceasefire, more than 60,000 children benefited from UNRWA’s Temporary Learning Spaces established in community shelters for displaced people. These spaces offered children a respite from the war and provided basic learning and play activities.”

He added that after the ceasefire came into effect, the number of these spaces increased to make education accessible in new areas. “As winter approaches, we urgently need thousands of tents and tarpaulins to protect children from the cold,” he said.

Lazzarini emphasized that nearly all school buildings have been destroyed or severely damaged: “Rebuilding and repairing them will require time and resources. There is no time to lose.”
