Israel says over 60% of Hamas tunnels were not destroyed
Stockholm, October 25 (Hibya) – According to Israel’s N12 TV channel, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz told U.S. Vice President JD Vance during his visit to Israel that more than 60% of Hamas tunnels were not destroyed during the war.
The remaining tunnels are located on both sides of the yellow line marking the partial withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) following the ceasefire agreement with Hamas. This means that tunnels still exist in areas where the IDF currently operates.
Katz said, “In accordance with the Trump plan, the most important joint task in the disarmament of Gaza is the destruction of the tunnels.”
He added, “We must return all the hostages, eliminate all the tunnels, disarm Hamas, and prevent it from being a sovereign entity in Gaza.”
According to N12, six months ago, during internal security discussions, the Israeli military reported that it had destroyed only about 25% of Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip.
According to Ofir Winter, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), part of Hamas’s military buildup before October 7 came from Egypt. He added that Israel now faces the challenge of creating new and reliable security arrangements to monitor the Philadelphi Corridor.
Israel has taken steps to strengthen security cooperation with Egypt. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met on October 21 with Egyptian Intelligence Chief Hassan Rashad to discuss Gaza and border security issues.
