German customs officers find 1,500 tarantulas in chocolate package
Cologne, July 16 (Hibya) – Customs officers at Germany’s Cologne/Bonn Airport found 1,500 tarantulas on Monday in a package arriving from Vietnam.
The box was labeled "chocolate sponge cake," but due to a strange smell that didn’t resemble chocolate, customs officials decided to open it and inspect the contents.
Jens Ahland, the spokesperson for airport customs, said that officers are used to finding unusual and illegal goods passing through, but even the most experienced inspectors were left speechless when faced with the tarantulas.
Ahland added that it’s sad how people treat animals, noting that only a portion of the young tarantulas survived the journey. The survivors were handed over to experts.
A lawsuit was filed against the registered recipient of the shipment.
