Spanish government admits preparations to tackle forest fires were insufficient
Madrid, September 2 (Hibya) - The Spanish Prime Minister stated that this summer the country made great efforts to combat the worst forest fires in its history, but admitted that the government was not sufficiently prepared. He added that he plans to increase the number of firefighters and forest rangers.
In Spain, forest fires had never before burned such vast areas. Four people lost their lives and thousands were forced to abandon their homes.
Discussing the government’s efforts, Sanchez said the number of firefighters and rangers needed to be increased. He also added that investment in more precise measuring equipment was necessary to better predict when a disaster is approaching.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s Socialist Party and the main opposition, the People’s Party, are arguing over who is to blame.
The Socialists accuse the People’s Party of being unprepared for a hot summer in the regions it governs. They also accuse it of downplaying the threat posed by global warming.
The People’s Party, on the other hand, argues that the fires may have been caused by arson and that the government’s excessive austerity policies affected, for example, the amount of aid the army could provide.
