Russian submarine cable in the Baltic Sea damaged due to "external influences"
Helsinki, February 9 (Hibya) - Russian telecommunications giant "Rostelecom" announced that a submarine cable in the Baltic Sea was damaged due to "external influences." In recent months, several telecommunications and power cables in the Baltic Sea have been cut, and politicians have blamed Russia for the incidents.
A spokesperson for "Rostelecom" stated that some time has passed since the cable was damaged, repairs are ongoing, and no service disruptions are expected for customers.
Yesterday, the Finnish Coast Guard reported that it had observed a Russian vessel believed to be repairing a submarine cable in the Kirjala Basin. Authorities confirmed that the damaged section of the cable is within Finland's exclusive economic zone.
The repeated damage to submarine cables in the Baltic Sea prompted NATO countries in January to deploy ships, aircraft, drones, and submarines to monitor and protect critical seabed infrastructure.
