Pakistan Signs BBNJ Agreement
Islamabad, July 22 (Hibya) – Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar today signed the BBNJ Agreement, which concerns the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in the high seas under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Having played an active role in the negotiations, Pakistan assumed a significant responsibility in shaping the process. During two major sessions, Pakistan chaired the G77 and China Group, advocating for justice and equality on behalf of developing countries. In this context, it promoted an approach based on the principle of the “common heritage of humanity.”
The BBNJ Agreement aims to strengthen international cooperation in protecting biodiversity in marine areas beyond national jurisdiction.
