Lazzarini: I continue to call for accountability and justice
New York, October 4 (Hibya) - Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said he continues to call for accountability and justice to ensure that those responsible for the atrocities committed on and after October 7, 2023, are brought to justice and held accountable.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Lazzarini noted that a rare and promising momentum has been created to achieve a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and to lay the groundwork for a long-term solution that will end decades of conflict.
He stressed that this represents a rare window of hope for the UN and especially for UNRWA to address the famine and indescribable suffering faced by more than 2 million people. Lazzarini said:
“Children’s education is a priority: UNRWA has the expertise and staff to support the gradual return of more than 660,000 boys and girls living among the rubble to formal education. In the meantime, the agency will continue to provide essential services to the people of Gaza — traumatized people who have lost loved ones — such as primary health care, waste management, and mental health support.”
Lazzarini reiterated the call to lift the blockade, the ban on the entry of UNRWA international staff, and humanitarian aid, saying: “This way we can support our Palestinian colleagues at this critical moment.”
He emphasized that he continues to call for accountability and justice: “What we urgently need: the release of all hostages in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners. The lifting of the blockade, the ban on UNRWA, and all restrictions on regular, large-scale humanitarian aid. The cessation of all bombings throughout the Gaza Strip and the achievement of a permanent ceasefire.”
