Common Questions About Gluten-Free Diet
Nutrition and Diet Specialist Cansu Kahraman explains when a gluten-free diet is preferred.
Kahraman discusses celiac disease and explains that it is an autoimmune disease triggered by the consumption of storage proteins scientifically known as prolamins, commonly referred to as gluten. Nutrition and Diet Specialist Cansu Kahraman stated, "Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease that is triggered in the small intestine by consuming gluten, found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. The only effective treatment for celiac disease is adhering to a lifelong gluten-free diet. This diet involves the complete removal of grain products that contain gluten from one's diet. Careful eating and avoiding gluten-containing foods help celiac patients control symptoms and contribute to the healing of the intestines."
Gluten Intolerance
Kahraman explained that gluten sensitivity or intolerance can occur in individuals who do not have celiac disease but experience digestive issues when they consume gluten-containing foods. She said, "These individuals may experience symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and nausea when consuming gluten. This condition can cause symptoms similar to celiac disease, but the immune system does not react in the same way."
Kahraman also mentioned that Dermatitis Herpetiformis is a skin condition closely associated with celiac disease. In this rare condition, an immune response to gluten in the body leads to blistering and severe itching on the skin. Treatment typically includes a gluten-free diet, as removing gluten can help alleviate skin symptoms and aid in the healing of blisters. However, it is important to undergo this diet under medical supervision and be patient to achieve successful results, as skin healing may take some time."
Nutrition and Diet Specialist Cansu Kahraman listed other conditions as well:
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), gluten sensitivity outside of celiac disease, and a gluten-free diet for healthy individuals."
