Zohran Mamdani Wins New York Mayoral Race
New York, November 5 (Hibya) – Zohran Mamdani defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa to become New York City’s 111th mayor.
Mamdani will make history as the city’s first Muslim mayor and, at 34, the youngest in more than a century.
Zohran Mamdani’s victory marks his rise from a little-known state legislator to the leader of the nation’s largest city. Since his shocking win over three-term former governor Cuomo in the Democratic primary last June, Mamdani has steadily maintained his lead in the race.
Incumbent mayor Eric Adams, who was running for a second term as an independent, withdrew from the race in September.
Meanwhile, Democratic representative Mikie Sherrill won the New Jersey gubernatorial race.
Sherrill’s victory over businessman and former Republican state legislator Jack Ciattarelli ensured that the state’s highest office remains in Democratic hands.
