Youth climate group stages coffin protest in response to COP30
Istanbul, 15 November (Hibya) – The youth branch of Mouvement Ecologique, known as “Move”, placed two symbolic coffin models in front of the House of Representatives as a protest, referring to the ongoing annual UN climate conference in Brazil.
Spokesperson Alex Uehmen explained the content and purpose of the action:
“In one coffin, we placed the world we want to protect — everything that represents our society, such as nature, biodiversity, democracy and human rights. In the other coffin, we put the obstacles standing before us — figuratively speaking — such as fossil fuels that destroy the environment, valuing profit over climate protection, using profit to block climate-friendly policies or lobbying efforts.”
Sophie Thiry of Mouvement Ecologique emphasized that the time has come for concrete action: “Our forests and oceans are not being taken care of. We want the super-rich to pay higher taxes, the fossil fuel industry to pay taxes, less dependence on fossil fuels and a reduction in deforestation.”
The young protesters stressed that they are tired of empty political promises and that much more must be done to combat climate change.
