UN: Climate chaos is rewriting the rules of weather
New York, March 23 (Hibya) - The United Nations stated in a message marking World Meteorological Day that climate change is increasing extreme weather events and that accurate scientific data is the first line of defense.
In its 2026 World Meteorological Day statement, the UN announced that climate change is leading to more frequent and more destructive extreme weather events, emphasizing that “accurate and reliable scientific knowledge is the first line of defense.”
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted that millions of observations and thousands of processors operate behind weather forecasts, with this data shared through a global network coordinated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Guterres said: “Data from satellites, weather balloons, ocean buoys and remote stations are used in everything from our daily lives to billion-dollar economic decisions.”
Guterres added that WMO’s observation and forecasting systems form the backbone of economies and that early warning mechanisms have saved millions of lives, stating that World Meteorological Day is an opportunity “to celebrate the work of the WMO community in protecting communities today and building resilience for tomorrow.”
