Meloni: Defending rights also means defending security, law, and freedom
Rome, May 23 (Hibya) – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that they signed a letter calling for amendments to the European Convention on Human Rights and for granting greater authority to governments.
Meloni stated that Italy and Denmark supported a clear and bold letter also signed by other European countries.
Highlighting their duty to protect citizens, values, and democracy, Meloni said:
"We are leaders of societies that protect human rights, but the European Convention on Human Rights is often interpreted in a way that prevents states from deporting foreign criminals or protecting their borders. We cannot accept this."
Calling for more national autonomy in deciding when to deport foreign offenders, greater freedom in determining who cannot be returned, and an end to using rights as weapons against borders, Meloni added: "Defending rights also means defending security, law, and freedom."
