Lazzarini: Widespread famine can only be reversed with political will
New York, July 25 (Hibya) – Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), stated regarding Gaza that widespread famine can only be reversed with political will.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Lazzarini expressed that more children are dying in Gaza today, their bodies weakened by hunger.
He pointed out that the flawed distribution system is not designed to handle the humanitarian crisis but serves military and political purposes.
Lazzarini emphasized that Israel controls all aspects of humanitarian aid access inside and outside Gaza, saying:
"Airborne aid is the most expensive and inefficient way to deliver assistance. It is a distraction from inaction. When bureaucratic and political obstacles are removed, the humanitarian community has shown it can provide large-scale aid with dignity and without direction. During the ceasefire earlier this year, we succeeded in reversing deepening hunger."
Lazzarini stressed that widespread famine can only be reversed with political will and added, "If we disappoint the Palestinians in Gaza, it is likely others will be disappointed in the future. Let us not create a dangerous and irreversible precedent."
