Lazzarini: Saving lives must take precedence over military and political agendas
New York, May 23 (Hibya) – UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini emphasized that saving lives in Gaza must come before military and political agendas.
Lazzarini stated that no one should be surprised or shocked by scenes of aid being looted, stolen, or “disappearing” in Gaza, noting: “The people of Gaza have been starving and deprived of basic needs, including water and medicine, for more than 11 weeks.”
He stressed that aid reaching Gaza is like “searching for a needle in a haystack,” saying: “Parents couldn’t find food for their children. Elderly people died due to a lack of medicine. A meaningful and uninterrupted flow of aid is the only way to prevent the worsening of the current disaster.”
Lazzarini noted that 500–600 trucks per day are needed, operated through the UN including UNRWA, and added: “During the ceasefire, we brought in an average of 500–600 trucks per day without diversion or looting. Saving lives must take precedence over military and political agendas. The people of Gaza cannot wait any longer.”
