Ghebreyesus: People in Gaza must have the right to access healthcare
Geneva, December 30 (Hibya) - WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for an end to attacks on hospitals in Gaza and urged for a ceasefire.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted that hospitals in Gaza have once again become battlefields, and the healthcare system is under serious threat. "The Kamal Adwan Hospital in North Gaza is out of service. Following the attack, patients and staff were forcibly evacuated, and the hospital director, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, was detained two days ago. His whereabouts are unknown. We call for his immediate release," he said.
Ghebreyesus noted that critical patients were transferred to the Indonesian Hospital, which has itself lost functionality. "Amid the ongoing chaos in North Gaza, WHO and its partners sent essential medical and hygiene supplies, food, and water to the Indonesian Hospital today and transferred 10 critical patients to Al-Shifa Hospital. During the transfer, four patients were detained. We urge Israel to ensure the rights and healthcare needs of these patients. The Indonesian Hospital, heavily damaged and unable to provide care, now houses 7 patients and 15 healthcare staff."
Ghebreyesus reported that the Al-Ahli Hospital and Al-Wafa Rehabilitation Hospital in Gaza City were attacked today and sustained damage. "We reiterate: attacks on hospitals must stop. People in Gaza must have the right to access healthcare. Humanitarian workers must have access to deliver medical aid. We call for a ceasefire!" he emphasized.
