Ghebreyesus: Africa can be self-sufficient in medicine and vaccine production
Geneva, August 27 (Hibya) – World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized that local production in Africa is critical for ensuring access to the medicines and vaccines people need.
WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus said that Africa has the opportunity to build a sustainable and self-sufficient health system.
“Africa can be self-sufficient in producing medicines and vaccines for diseases affecting its population, even if these products are not attractive to foreign investors,” Ghebreyesus said, highlighting the importance of local production.
He also welcomed Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema’s initiative to establish a cholera vaccine production facility, stressing that the right to health includes equal access to vital products, including essential medicines and vaccines.
