EU: The EU will take "firm and proportionate countermeasures" against US tariffs
Brussels, February 11 (Hibya) - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded to the midnight announcement by the US regarding tariffs on aluminum and steel, stating that the bloc will respond with "firm and proportionate countermeasures".
Ursula von der Leyen said: "I deeply regret the US decision to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminum exports.
Tariffs are taxes. They are bad for businesses and even worse for consumers.
Unfair tariffs against the EU will not go unanswered. They will trigger firm and proportionate countermeasures.
The EU will act to protect its economic interests. We will protect our workers, businesses, and consumers."
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, speaking this morning in the German parliament regarding US tariffs, stated: "If the US leaves us no other choice, the EU will respond as one. With 450 million citizens, we are the world's largest market and have the strength to act accordingly.
However, I hope we avoid the misguided path of tariffs and counter-tariffs. In the end, trade wars always cost both sides prosperity."
