Death toll in Philippine typhoon rises to 140, state of emergency declared
Stockholm, November 6 (Hibya) – In the Philippines, the death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegis rose to 140 on Thursday night, with more than 100 people still missing. The country’s president declared a national state of emergency.
Rafaelito Alejandro, the official responsible for the country’s civil defense, said that the floods had mainly affected large cities and densely populated areas.
Cebu Island was the hardest-hit area, where the highest number of deaths were recorded.
Provincial spokesperson Ainjeliz Orong stated that the deaths were caused by drowning and by people colliding with floating debris.
According to officials, hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated because of the typhoon, and many were forced to take shelter on the roofs of homes and cars due to rising water levels.
