Death toll in Indonesia floods rises to 442 as search for food and water continues
Stockholm, December 1 (Hibya) – More than 400 people were killed and hundreds injured in devastating floods caused by cyclonic rains that struck Indonesia early last week.
Rescue teams are racing to reach parts of Sumatra Island that were hardest hit, where thousands of people are stranded and deprived of essential supplies.
An extremely rare tropical storm named Cyclone Senyar triggered catastrophic landslides and floods across Indonesia; homes were destroyed and thousands of buildings submerged.
Heavy rains and storms devastated areas of Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Sri Lanka, affecting millions of people and causing more than 900 deaths across Asia this month.
Aceh Province on the island of Sumatra is among the worst-hit regions.
According to the National Disaster Management Agency, the death toll now stands at 96, with 75 people still missing.
Evacuation camps are widely set up across 20 districts and cities, including 96 locations in the city of Lhokseumawe. As store supplies dwindle, some residents reported that children have been drinking collected rainwater.
