New government formed in Greenland
Copenhagen, March 28 (Hibya) – According to Greenland's state broadcaster, the new government in Greenland is preparing to sign a coalition agreement at noon today. According to sources, all parties in Greenland’s parliament, except for the Naleraq party, are participating in the government.
A total of five parties were elected to the Greenlandic Parliament: Ataqatigiit, the party of current Prime Minister Múte B. Egede; Atassut, led by Aqqalu Jerimiassen; Siumut, led by Erik Jensen; and Demokraatit, led by Jens-Frederik Nielsen, which achieved a landslide victory in the elections.
It was expected that Demokraatit and Inuit Ataqatigiit would form the ruling coalition in Greenland, but as stated this evening, a broader coalition was also possible.
The opposition party Naleraq places great importance on Greenlandic independence and came in second place in the election with 24.5% of the vote.
While Greenland handles its internal affairs, Denmark is responsible for many areas such as foreign relations. Like many other politicians in Greenland, Nielsen expressed deep concern about Trump’s interest in the country.
In recent months, Greenland and its politics have received unusual attention, largely due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated statements about his intention to take control of the country.
