The USGS reported that the earthquake occurred around 12:50 p.m. local time, 16 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of the town of Sagaing in Myanmar.
According to the USGS, about 12 minutes after the initial quake, a second strong aftershock with a magnitude of 6.4 was recorded.
The quake was felt as far away as Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.
A resident of Yangon, Myanmar's largest city, who wished to remain anonymous, told CNN:
"We felt the quake for about a minute and then ran outside the building."
"We saw other people running out of buildings too. It was very sudden and very strong."
