UNRWA welcomes ICJ ruling
New York, October 22 (Hibya) – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) announced that it welcomes the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that clearly outlines Israel’s obligations.
In its statement, UNRWA emphasized that the Court’s ruling explicitly affirms Israel’s obligation to permit and facilitate humanitarian activities conducted by the United Nations, particularly by UNRWA.
The statement also recalled that Israel’s claims that UNRWA had been “infiltrated by Hamas” were unproven, and accusations regarding the Agency’s neutrality were unfounded. It further stressed the need for accountability for the killing of UNRWA staff, the mistreatment of humanitarian workers, and the destruction of the Agency’s facilities.
“UNRWA is a principal humanitarian actor with a unique and enduring connection to the occupied Palestinian territories. Facilitating our operations is of critical importance, especially given the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza,” the statement said.
