UN General Assembly adopts two-state solution proposal
New York, September 13 (Hibya) – The United Nations General Assembly today adopted a resolution calling for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.
Today, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, without the participation of Hamas.
The seven-page proposal is based on a July meeting in New York on the two-state solution. 142 member states approved the proposal, ten voted against, and twelve, including the US and Israel, abstained.
The resolution contains some of the UN’s strongest criticism of Hamas to date. It condemns Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack and demands the release of all hostages held in Gaza, the transfer of control, and the handover of all weapons to the Palestinian Authority.
The resolution text states: “We condemn Hamas’ attacks on civilians on October 7. Hamas must release all hostages held in Gaza.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that Israel will never accept the creation of a Palestinian state.
A number of countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, plan to recognize Palestine’s independence next week at the UN General Assembly.
