Türk: The war on drugs destroyed lives
New York, April 30 (Hibya) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated that global "war on drugs" policies have failed to deliver expected results and have cost millions of lives.
Volker Türk emphasized that current approaches have fallen short in addressing substance addiction, instead increasing stigma and pushing individuals out of society. In his statement, he said: “The war on drugs ended lives but didn’t end drug use.” He called for a shift from punitive policies to solutions that are human rights-based, inclusive, and health-centered.
Türk said: “It’s time for policies that favor inclusion over punishment, treatment over incarceration. It’s time to treat the person, not punish the disorder.”
