Thousands evacuated from homes in Berlin after discovery of old bomb
Berlin, September 19 (Hibya) – Thousands of residents of the Fischerinsel district in central Berlin were forced to leave their homes last night after construction workers discovered a World War II-era bomb in the River Spree.
For safety reasons, a wide area was cordoned off, and police went door to door urging people to evacuate.
The area hosts many embassies and municipal buildings. The bomb is planned to be defused on site, but police said the thick mud at the bottom of the river could delay the operation and that it may take some time during the day.
Police said this was the largest evacuation in the city in recent times due to the discovery of old bombs. The district is a popular tourist spot. Boat traffic on the River Spree was halted, streets were closed, and metro services in the area were suspended.
