Russia targets Ukrainian railways with night attack
Moscow, September 17 (Hibya) – Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba wrote in a Facebook post early Wednesday: “The enemy tried tonight to disable transformer substations supplying power to the railway network with a large-scale drone attack.”
Local officials said the Kremlin is conducting a campaign to destroy Ukraine’s main infrastructure artery, the one that keeps the country running and connected to the EU.
Kuleba added: “Such attacks have a clear purpose: to complicate passenger and freight transport, disrupt the stable operation of transportation, and create additional pressure on the people and the economy.”
According to Kuleba, during Russia’s large overnight assault on eastern Ukraine’s railways, about 20 trains were in transit. While no injuries were reported, 26 trains in the Dnipro and Odessa regions were suspended with delays. Passengers said they were stranded on trains for more than five hours due to the strikes.
Chairman of the Ukrainian Railways Board, Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, said: “Another night, and yet another complex attack on Ukraine’s railways.”
Pertsovskyi told the state news agency Ukrinform on Tuesday that since August, the Russian army has been targeting railway infrastructure around Ukraine, which Kyiv uses for both civilian and cargo transport, aiming to destroy critical junctions.
“Drones are heavily attacking our key stations. Examples include strikes on Lozova, Synelnykovo, and Kozyatyn stations… They are hitting transfer stations almost everywhere in the country,” he said.
The attacks are complex and target energy substations, locomotive depots, and passenger stations. “The enemy attacks in such a way as to destroy the transfer hub,” Pertsovskyi said.
Since Russia launched the war in 2022, Ukraine has banned air travel for security reasons. Railways have become the main channels keeping the country running and connected to the EU.
