Mexican President Proposes Renaming North America to Trump
Mexico City, January 9 (Hibya) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to Donald Trump's proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America by suggesting a name change for North America.
During a daily press briefing in front of a world map, Sheinbaum proposed naming the continent "América Mexicana" or "Mexican America," referring to an 1814 constitutional document where Mexico was referred to by that name.
"Sounds good, doesn’t it?" said the Mexican President with a sarcastic tone, adding that the ocean basin bordered by the U.S. coast, Mexico's eastern states, and Cuba has been known as the Gulf of Mexico since 1607.
Trump, set to be sworn in for a second term on January 20, said on Tuesday that he plans to rename the Gulf as the "Gulf of America," adding that the name "has a nice ring to it."
