Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni shared images of two police officers who were attacked and injured during an arrest and made a statement about the incident.

Meloni said the suspect, who was tried on charges of resisting arrest, insulting officers and assault, was brought before a judge and the detention order was confirmed. Despite this, Meloni said the suspect was released a few hours later.

Arguing that such decisions undermine the work of law enforcement officers who work to ensure citizens’ safety and risk their own security while carrying out their duties, Meloni said the government would continue to strengthen protection measures and resources for law enforcement.

Meloni said it was difficult to understand and unacceptable for the suspect to be released within hours after serious conduct and an attack on a representative of the state, adding that this undermines the overall credibility of the state.
