Meloni calls on the EU to take joint action on irregular migration
Rome, August 1 (Hibya) – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called on the European Union (EU) to take coordinated action on irregular migration following developments in Ceuta.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that the images coming from Ceuta once again demonstrate how urgent it is for Europe to provide a common response to irregular migration.
Meloni said: “Together with Denmark, Italy submitted a letter signed by 22 European Union member states calling for joint action to strengthen the external borders, prevent irregular migration, combat human smugglers, make return procedures more effective, and eliminate all factors encouraging illegal entry.”
Meloni added that the approach Italy has advocated for a long time is being embraced by an increasing number of European countries. “Protecting the European Union’s external borders is not the responsibility of a single country but of Europe as a whole,” she said.
