Leyen: The EU will continue to maintain pressure on the Kremlin in 2026
Brussels, December 27 (Hibya) – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that contacts were held with leaders ahead of the Trump–Zelensky meeting and that support for Ukraine will continue in 2026.
European Commission President Leyen stated that contacts were made with several leaders prior to the planned peace talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Noting that all steps aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace that preserves Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are supported, Leyen stressed that this process also seeks to strengthen Ukraine’s security and defense capacities and to make this an integral part of the security of the European continent.
Leyen reiterated that the European Commission will continue in 2026 to keep up pressure on the Kremlin, maintain its support for Ukraine, and closely accompany the country throughout its European Union accession process, reaffirming the EU’s determination on this matter.
