Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson made a statement following the extraordinary meeting of the National Security Council.

Kristersson said the most important responsibility of any government is to ensure the security of its citizens, adding that thanks to Sweden’s historic strengthening of its defense capabilities and its NATO membership, the country is experiencing one of its safest periods in decades despite instability in the surrounding environment.

Kristersson said the National Security Council was called to an extraordinary meeting after the German government held Russia responsible for the failed drone attack on Leipzig Airport the previous evening. He added that during the meeting, the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service (MUST) and the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) presented the government with their assessments of hybrid threats originating from Russia.

Kristersson noted that, according to the Swedish government’s assessment, the events in Leipzig should be seen as part of a pattern of intensifying Russian hybrid activities characterized by an increased willingness to take risks and growing recklessness.

Kristersson said Russia’s actions aim to weaken Europe’s support for Ukraine, increase pressure on societies, and create division and fear, adding, “Russia will not succeed.”

Kristersson said the Swedish government would continue to stand firmly in support of Ukraine, counter Russia, and strengthen the country’s security and defense.
