Immunity lifted from far-right AfD lawmaker in Germany
Berlin, September 13 (Hibya) – On Thursday, parliamentary immunity was lifted from Maximilian Krah, a member of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, due to a corruption investigation. Police also searched his office in Berlin, his home and office in Dresden, and his office in Brussels, where he had served for six years as a Member of the European Parliament.
Krah was elected to the Bundestag in the German parliamentary elections held in February. He had previously served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2019 to 2025 representing the party.
A spokesperson for the Dresden public prosecutor’s office told Politico that the investigation focuses on money laundering and corruption, particularly payments suspected to have been received by Krah from China. German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported that a Dresden court had issued a search warrant.
AfD leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Crupalla said on Thursday that they take the lifting of Krah’s immunity and the searches seriously. They stated they expect the investigation to proceed quickly and the results to be made public.
In May of last year, Brussels police had already raided Krah’s office after his aide Jian Guo was arrested on charges of spying for China.
