Harris: We will introduce legislation to combat online financial fraud
Dublin, February 2 (Hibya) – Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris announced that new legislative steps will be taken to combat online financial fraud, particularly deepfake advertisements.
Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Harris shared his assessment on reducing online financial fraud.
In his statement, Harris said, “Online financial fraud is a significant problem that I want to see reduced. We are encountering numerous deepfake advertisements in which well-known figures are portrayed as endorsing a financial service or product. This causes confusion and concern and leads citizens to become victims of fraud.”
Noting that he met last week with officials from Bank of Ireland and AIB, Harris stated, “I discussed this issue with them and I know that they are aligned with us in this fight.”
Emphasizing that work is also being carried out at the European level, Harris said, “We have achieved changes at the European level in this area.”
Pointing to the new legal regulation, Harris added, “I plan to introduce a legislative amendment that will require search engines or social media companies to verify that the person featured in an advertisement has given consent before the ad is published. This will be an effective measure in the fight against fraud.”
