The official investigation launched on Monday also expands an ongoing probe into X’s recommendation systems, the algorithms that help internet users discover new content.

The Grok chatbot, which sparked international outrage, allowed users to digitally “undress” women and children and place them in provocative poses. According to researchers at the Center for Countering Digital Hate, Grok’s AI generated around 3 million sexual images in less than two weeks, with about 23,000 appearing to depict children.

X still allows users to share sexualized images generated by the Grok artificial intelligence tool.

The Commission said its new investigation “will assess whether the company has properly assessed and mitigated the risks related to Grok’s functions in the EU, including the risks of sharing illegal content such as manipulated obscene images and content that could be considered child sexual abuse material.”
