EU decision on Russian gas imports
Brussels, October 20 (Hibya) – European Union (EU) energy ministers have agreed to gradually phase out the remaining natural gas imports from Russia and to completely ban them as of January 1, 2028.
According to a statement from the EU, the Council has adopted its negotiating position on a draft regulation aimed at gradually ending the import of Russian natural gas.
This regulation is a key element of the EU’s REPowerEU roadmap to end dependence on Russian energy, following Russia’s weaponization of gas supplies and repeated disruptions to EU deliveries, which had major effects on Europe’s energy market.
The proposed regulation introduces a legally binding, phased ban on both pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from Russia, with a total ban taking effect from January 1, 2028.
The Council agreement maintains this deadline, signaling a strong commitment to the phased withdrawal.
This regulation will contribute to achieving the overall goal of a resilient and independent EU energy market while maintaining supply security.
