Eastern European officials view Putin’s remarks with skepticism
Moscow, August 16 (Hibya) – Senior government officials from Eastern Europe reacted with skepticism to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statements following the Alaska summit.
Putin said he was interested in ending the conflict but added that this would require “eliminating the fundamental causes” and that “the situation in Ukraine” was related to “fundamental threats to Russia’s security.”
Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene, in a post on X on Saturday morning local time, accused Putin of “more pressure and veiled threats,” referring to the Russian leader’s warning to Ukraine and Europe not to “sabotage” the progress made at the summit.
Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky also stated that he welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts but doubted Putin’s interest in reaching an agreement.
