European Council President Antonio Costa held a phone conversation with Iraqi President Nezar Ahmed.

Costa said he congratulated President Nezar Ahmed on his election, stating: "I congratulated him on his election at a critical moment for Iraq and the region."

Emphasizing that Iraq is an important partner for the European Union, Costa said: "We remain committed to supporting Iraq's stability and prosperity based on full respect for its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity."

Costa also welcomed the determination of the Iraqi authorities to disarm Iran-backed militias and ensure that the right to possess weapons rests solely with the state. "The renewed escalation of the war in Iran is deeply concerning. Diplomacy is the only path to a truly peaceful, secure, and stable Middle East," he said.
