Costa: EU approves binding 90% emissions reduction by 2040
Brussels, November 5 (Hibya) – President of the EU Council, Antonio Costa, announced that the European Union has entered a new phase towards achieving climate neutrality.
Costa emphasized the EU’s commitment to a fair, socially balanced, and economically efficient climate transition.
He underlined that the goal is to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness without leaving anyone behind, noting that the EU Council has approved a binding 90% reduction in emissions by 2040.
Costa added that an agreement was also reached on a reduction target between 66.25% and 72.5% by 2035, stating: “These agreements – ten years after the Paris Agreement – reaffirm the EU’s global leadership in the fight against climate change.”
