Brazilian President Lula da Silva held a bilateral meeting with Uruguayan President Orsi in New York on September 21 as part of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week.

Lula said they discussed the integration of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the threats of political extremism and disinformation in the region and around the world.

The two leaders also reviewed bilateral agenda items, particularly infrastructure and agricultural trade. Lula thanked Orsi for authorizing Brazil to use the surplus of Uruguay’s quota for beef exports to China.

Lula also expressed interest in learning from Uruguay’s experience in regulating online betting.

It was stated that Lula and Orsi should meet again as soon as possible to advance cross-border integration projects. Particular attention was given during the meeting to advancing the construction of the bilateral bridge over the Jaguarão River.
