Al Thani says respect for UN Charter principles must be restored
Doha, January 28 (Hibya) – Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, said that risks threatening commitment to the rule of international law are increasing, stressing that trust in international law and respect for the principles of the UN Charter must be restored.
The State of Qatar emphasized that the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations represents an important opportunity for member states to renew their shared commitment to the rule of international law.
It was stated that the rule of international law is the cornerstone of international peace and security and an indispensable element of multilateralism in addressing protracted conflicts and various violations of the UN Charter and international law.
These remarks were made by Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, during a high-level open debate of the UN Security Council held at UN Headquarters in New York under the agenda item “Promoting and strengthening the rule of law in the maintenance of international peace and security.”
The title of the session was “Reaffirming the rule of international law: pathways to revitalizing peace, justice, and multilateralism.”
Al Thani noted that risks threatening commitment to the rule of international law are on the rise and called for restoring trust in international law and respect for the principles of the UN Charter.
