Witkoff visits Gaza aid center amid worsening hunger crisis
Stockholm, August 2 (Hibya) – U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff visited a controversial U.S.-backed aid distribution center in Gaza on Friday. The center is one of three areas where hundreds of Palestinians have been killed in recent weeks while trying to access scarce food supplies.
Witkoff said he spent five hours in Gaza on Friday to better understand the humanitarian situation and report it to Donald Trump. Earlier this week, the U.S. President declared there was "real famine" in Gaza, refuting claims made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump said Friday evening, “I spoke with Steve Witkoff. He had a great meeting with many people and the main topic was food. There were other discussions I’ll talk about later, but the meeting was about feeding the people – and that’s what we want.”
Accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, Witkoff visited an aid center in the southern city of Rafah, operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), one of only three operational centers in the blockaded area.
GHF was established to bypass the United Nations' role in aid distribution after Israeli complaints that UN aid was reaching Hamas. However, the new group has been criticized for failing to improve conditions as Gaza’s hunger crisis deepens.
