US Democrats to try to block Trump’s tariffs
Washington, January 18 (Hibya) – US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Saturday that Senate Democrats will block the new 10% tariffs set to be imposed on European countries due to President Trump’s calls for the United States to purchase Greenland.
Schumer said in a statement: “Donald Trump’s reckless tariffs have already raised prices and hurt our economy, and now he’s making things even worse. It’s unbelievable that, for his fanciful quest to take over Greenland, he wants to double down on stupidity by imposing tariffs on our closest allies.
Senate Democrats will introduce legislation to block these tariffs before they do further damage to the American economy and our allies in Europe,” he said.
Meanwhile, Trump’s threats to seize Greenland by military force were also met with opposition from many US lawmakers and most Americans.
Senators Thom Tillis (R–North Carolina) and Lisa Murkowski (R–Alaska) criticized the tariffs in strong terms; Tillis said the tariffs were “bad for America, bad for American businesses, and bad for America’s allies.”
Murkowski warned that the tariffs would push European allies away from the United States.
“We are already seeing the consequences of these measures in real time: our NATO allies are having to divert their attention and resources to Greenland; this directly plays into Putin’s hands by threatening the stability of the strongest coalition of democracies the world has ever seen,” she wrote on X.
